Peavey PC1600 midi controller - button rehab

I've had this unit since the early nineties, it was one of the first programmable midi fader boxes. It's had various ROM upgrades as they came along, and finally some years ago I installed a non-volatile SRAM chip, doing away with the need for an internal lithium battery. Details can be found via Defective Record's resource page for the unit. If you own one of these, you should check to see if the battery has leaked acid on to the PCB, which is a common problem, and the resulting corrosion can cause mayhem (in my case, corrosion on a nearby track caused a drop in voltage to a comparator, resulting in scrambled data from the faders.)

Recently there's been some inconsistent pushbutton response, so I went to investigate.


Above: disassembly is straightforward. Here rather than disrupt the heavy soldered joints to the LCD I've swung the motherboard over to the side to allow access to the fader/switch PCB which then unscrews off it's standoffs. The fader caps have to be removed for this.

Below: the black 'tabletops' of the pushbuttons just pull off, revealing the red switch surrounded by a translucent dust guard (I've desoldered this button, but that's probably not necessary).


You can see the dust guard is held by four black studs with slightly expanded tops. I carefully shaved one of these back to allow one corner of the guard to be lifted up, and then shot in a small amount of Caig's DEOXIT. The tabletop just clicks back on with a push. Button response is now back to normal.
